I’ve only driven across the Canada – US border once, like 10 years ago, and I was so nervous then and we only bought clothes and lunch.
I can’t imagine what people were thinking when they decided to cross the border with undeclared items, animals or even drugs.
Did it go something like “Hey, I have 50 turtles I could sell and make money…I don’t really want to pay shipping…so I’ll just pack these turtles up nice and cozy in my pants…” The border services agent was probably wondering why this dudes pants were quite bulky, and probably moving. “Sir, do you have something in your pants you’d like to declare — possibly some turtles that don’t belong in your pants?”
Even the thought of trying to sneak something across the border makes me nervous. Thankfully BUZZFEED put together a nice list of (sadly) Canadians that tried smuggling banned/illegal/undeclared items from one country to the next.
