News is coming out now that there’s something else in your parmesan cheese aside from cheese.
Mmmm tasty. Wood.
Reports say that wood pulp is used to prevent clumping – experts say it’s perfectly safe as long as it’s kept at an acceptable level – about 2 or 3%.
By the way, if you want to know if your parmesan has wood in it, look for its technical name… “Cellulose”
Experts are concerned now that some companies may be adding more wood than they should simply because it’s cheaper than cheese.
For example, a company called Bloomberg ran lab tests in the US and found that Wal-Mart’s Great Value 100% Grated Parmesan Cheese had about 7.8% cellulose in it….Kraft had 3.8 per cent.”
If you want to avoid the wood, the best thing to do is shred the cheese yourself.
