On this week in 1989, Pepsi dismissed Madonna as a spokesperson…that was right after the Vatican called her new (at the time) video “Blasphemous.”
In January of that same year the video was still being filmed and Pepsi made the big announcement that Madonna would be there new spokesperson for $5 million and they were also going to sponsor her world tour.
This was the first deal of that nature so it was a huge deal…it ran during The Grammys and The Cosby show which was huge during that time.
There was a lot of reaction to the video, as with anything Madonna did or still does…but in the end the Vatican called the video “blasphemous” and Pepsi pulled out.
