So Starbucks has announced that they are introducing a wine and beer menu at three Starbucks locations in Toronto. For more info on it, you can CLICK HERE.
My first reaction to the trial run was apathetic. I don’t live in Toronto and will likely never visit one of these locations. The more I thought about it though and the idea that it might actually extend North to include cities and towns like ours, the more I took exception to it.
My question is…do we really need wine and liquor to enjoy EVERYTHING in life? More and more, the trend is going towards licencing just about every kind of gathering place. I’m not trying to be judgemental and I’m not a prohibitionist but there are still many things that I enjoy very much without the help of alcohol. Call me Laura Ingalls but I can still enjoy a movie , can laugh till my sides hurt at the local bowling alley, and can most certainly settle in at the local coffee shop for a chat with one of my amazing girlfriends…without being under the influence. Wow huh?
I am the first to admit that I grew up in a bit of a bubble. I’ve never tried smoking…or drugs…and I can count on two or three fingers the amount of times I’ve been tipsy to the point of inebriation but somehow..I have always managed to have a hell of a good time…with or without out alcohol. It’s become a life skill over the years when everyone around you is drinking and you’re not…when everyone around you is treating the drinking and not the event, like it’s the entertainment.
My fear is that we’re creating a culture where our kids are going to grow up thinking that nothing can be fully enjoyed without a drink or two. Take a look around you…even on our Facebook pages…there are very few days where I don’t see three or four memes that depict someone in need of wine or some other form of alcohol to get through life. I have a great sense of humour and I’ve laughed at a few of them too but I can’t help but wonder if that’s the message we want to send out to the younger generation.
I’ve never been one to follow the crowd. After sensing the “wine is a solution to everything” movement was picking up speed on Facebook, my first instinct was to resist it. My second and third instincts are the same. Somehow, over the past few years, using wine as a coping mechanism seems to be gaining momentum…using wine as a coping mechanism and laughing about it has become “all the rage”.
When we ask ourselves why the braintrust at Starbucks seems to think that wine is what’s lacking from their customers enjoyment of the coffee shop experience…do we really need to look any further than social media for the answer? Somehow, I doubt that their customers were ordering half-caf caramel non-fat-skinny lattes and dropping that in the suggestion box.
My point is that maybe we should start re-thinking about those wine memes we share…the posts we write about desperately needing a drink to get through the day. I’ve probably made the joke a time or two myself without really even believing it, this announcement from Starbucks though has me thinking twice about whether this is the social media imprint I want to leave for the next generation.
