A few last thoughts on the entire Kelly and Michael debacle that played out on National television this past week…
I want to start by saying that I’m a big fan of Kelly Ripa…when Kathie Lee Gifford abandoned her post there many moons ago..I thought that no one could ever replace her. I was wrong. Kelly not only filled her shoes…she added some amazing accessories to go with the new outfit.
I can’t say that I ever felt the same way about Michael when he took over for Regis. He was okay at the job…but just okay…after giving the show a chance with Michael there…I found myself tuning in less and less and eventually..I realized that it had been a few years since I had watched the show at all. Again…just my opinion..I know lots of people loved him and Kelly together and that’s totally fair.
As a co-host of a morning show for over 20 years on the radio and for a short time on television, I might have a little more perspective than some on what it’s like to have to look for a new one. How it feels to be left behind and expected to just go on as if nothing is different. It’s not easy..but luckily for me…I’ve worked with some great co-hosts who have always treated me with the utmost consideration and respect when it’s become time for them to move on to greener pastures. Therefore…the transitions have always been smooth and after the fact…friendships have remained intact. I have truly been blessed and I know it.
I think the difference between my former co-hosts and Michael Strahan…is that when they were making a decision that affected me personally and professionally..I was given the consideration of a heads up…from that person…not the executive at Corus…who completely supported and never once disciplined my co-host for telling me first. Because they understood that co-hosting is a special relationship, that requires true friendship to make it authentic and real.
This is why I do side with Kelly on this one. I don’t buy that the network told Michael that he couldn’t tell her anything. And if they did…he still had other options. There was no way he was going to get fired for it leaking out or for revealing to Kelly that he was leaving. It was a cop out. He took the easy way out. He ghosted her…and that’s not cool. That was cowardly and she deserves to feel betrayed by him…because she was.
So I DO understand what she was upset about and totally feel she was justified in those feelings. What I don’t admire though…was her not showing up the next day. You’ve heard the tried and true saying that the show must go on…because it must…because at the end of the day…no matter what level of crappy your day has become…you are not bigger than the show…it’s not about you.
The hardest show I’ve ever had to do? The Monday after Jamie left…but I did it…I pulled up my big girl pants because that’s my job… and it was hers too. Because it wasn’t about her…it’s not about me…it’s about you.
