I just took a look at the first renderings of the plans for the future year round Barrie Farmers market. Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of this idea. It will be a huge tourist draw and I know that it will only encourage more local residents to make the market a regular stop on their grocery route. Love it..
Maybe this is just me but what I’m not a big fan of is the design. I am hoping that this isn’t the final blueprint for the project because I have to be honest…I’m a little disappointed in the direction it’s going.
Although I can appreciate a beautiful building when I see it…modern or otherwise..I feel like the Downtown core is not the place for buildings featuring cutting edge design and the latest in modernity…at least not if the big picture is drawing tourists to our Downtown…
I have always been a huge day tripper..in fact…there are very few small and larger towns I haven’t visited in Ontario. There are some that I visit…such as Niagra on the Lake…Unionville….St Jacobs…and Collingwood…that are busting at the seams during the summer and winter months…you cannot find a parking spot during the height of any tourist season in any of those towns…what do they have in common? They have stayed true to their history and acknowledged that when people visit any Downtown Core…they are looking for a certain feeling…and that feeling is stepping back in time…not a visit to IKEA outdoors.
You go to Toronto or NYC…you want the bustling electricity of the city …you come to a Downtown Core of a smaller city for an overnight stay and some shopping…..you’re looking for A Christmas Carol…you’re looking for small town USA in the summer time…and the more buildings we erect downtown that look like this one and others I’ve seen going up…I fear that we are moving so far away from what people really want that it will be too late to recover the opportunity that exists.
I am by no means against modern buildings or high rises…I just think they have a place…and it’s not in a Downtown we’re hoping to draw tourists to. I am no architectural expert but I do think I have expertise on what draws the day tripper tourist demo…because I am that demo…have been for 25 years…and I can tell you that modern buildings like the one I’m seeing here…are not going to do it. Tourists are searching for a feeling…give it to them…and our city’s Downtown Core will reap the rewards.
HERE is a look at the first renderings for the New Farmers Market…would love to hear what YOU think….
And a FURTHER LOOK at a proposed Downtown High rise at the 5 Points….
