According to The New York Times, cheerleading is now an Olympic sport. The International Olympic Committee’s executive board voted on Tuesday to recognize that it is a sport and will receive at least $25,000 every single year from the committee and can apply for additional grants.
Does this mean you’ll see cheerleaders at the 2018 Olympic games in South Korea or the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo? Maybe. The International Cheer Union executives can vote to recognize the sport and then petition to be included in the Games. If that petition is approved cheerleading will be included in the Games.
