Do you think they were right to fire her??
33-year-old Katie Nash is the social media manager at the Frederick County Public School District in Maryland and she was FIRED because she corrected a student’s spelling on Twitter.
According to the New York Post, a student tweeted at the district’s twitter account, “Close school tammarow PLEASE” and Katie responded with, “But then how would you learn how to spell tomorrow? :)”
The tweet got over 1,000 retweets and likes and the hashtag #KatieFromFCPS started to trend. The student who Katie responded to wrote on twitter he didn’t take what she said to heart and wasn’t bothered but the Frederick County Public School terminated her contract anyway.
This is not the first time Katie tweeted this way towards students on twitter. The New York Post points out “Nash had similar exchanges with other students complaining about showing up for school. She said school officials told her they didn’t approve of her tone with the kids and directed her to stop tweeting.”
Katie admits she didn’t listen and continued to access the FCPS Twitter feed but says, “As a new employee, I think I sort of would have expected that there would have been some counselling or some suggestions on how to improve.”
It doesn’t look like the school plans on giving Katie her job back even though a lot of people online are defending her and are rallying behind her on social media.
