I had no idea that years ago women weren’t allowed to run marathons because people thought their bodies couldn’t handle the long runs.
Crazy right?! Women weren’t allowed to run in the Boston Marathon until 1972 but Katherine Switzer ran the marathon in 1967, five years before she was allowed to run.
Katherine Switzer was 20-years-old and ran in the Boston marathon in 1967 under the name “K.V. Switzer.” She did that so they wouldn’t know she was a woman. She finished in 4 hours and 20 minutes even though an official tried to rip out her number a couple of miles into the race.
Katherine is now 70-years-old and she finished the Boston Marathon AGAIN, wearing the exact same number she wore 50 years ago and finished in 4 hours and 44 minutes. So yeah it’s about 20 minutes slower than her first time but she’s 70!
