One Twitter user said, “That does not sit well. Get permission from poppy fund in advance then give them all money raised.”
Another person said, “No profits going to any charity whatsoever?!? Oh hell no! You might as well be slapping veterans in the face with a jelly hand and finishing with a five finger sprinkle punch.”
Tim Hortons’ head office said in a statement, “As a proud Canadian brand, we have the utmost respect and honour for our veterans. The restaurant owner, who independently owns and operates this restaurant in Calgary, will (now) be matching and donating 100 per cent of the poppy donut proceeds to the Royal Canadian Legion.”
According to @Crackmacs on Twitter, Tim Hortons will also remove the poppy themed donuts from the Calgary location.
