The BMC will be getting a name change in 2019.
Molson Canada has declined an option to continue to hold naming rights to the arena which plays host to the OHL’s Barrie Colts.
According to a staff report: The naming rights for the Barrie Molson Centre was negotiated in 1994 as part of a land swap between the City of Barrie and Molson Canada. The City received 9 acres of land (valued at $112,000 per acre= approx. $1 million in value) and in return Molson’s received the naming rights to the facility. The naming rights agreement is set to expire on December 31st, 2018.
That staff at Access Barrie are asking to seek out any interested parties in the naming rights opportunity for the Barrie Molson Centre outside of the City’s Purchasing By-law process and report back to General Committee with any recommendations of potential sponsors. If no interested parties are found, the Barrie Molson Centre would be added to the list of assets in the Sponsorship Pilot Program.
That program is designed to: mitigate risk and assess the feasibility of implementing a broad sponsorship program using an external resource. The outsourced sponsorship pilot would be used to track results over 18 months and report back to council on the findings and whether or not it is viable to roll out the broader strategy with an outsourced model.
The item is on the agenda for Monday’s council meeting.
